"When the doctor in Dubai told us our only option was IVF with ICSI, and the cost would be 65,000 AED โ with no guarantee โ Ahmed and I sat in silence for a long time. We wanted a family more than anything. But at that price, with those odds, we didn't know if we could afford to keep hoping."
This is Fatima and Ahmed's story โ a journey from a Dubai fertility clinic with limited options to Luohu Hospital in Shenzhen, where advanced technology, cultural understanding, and affordable care came together. As told to the FertiJourney Medical Team.
The Diagnosis: Male Factor Infertility
Fatima and Ahmed had been married for four years when they started trying to conceive. After a year without success, they sought medical help.
"In our culture, infertility is often assumed to be the woman's issue," Fatima says. "When the tests came back, it was actually Ahmed. Low sperm count, poor motility, and abnormal morphology โ what the doctors called 'severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia.' I had to Google how to pronounce it."
Ahmed's diagnosis was a triple hit: low count (oligo-), poor movement (astheno-), and abnormal shape (terato-). "The doctor was straightforward. Natural conception was extremely unlikely. IVF with ICSI was our only realistic path."
Understanding Ahmed's Diagnosis
- Sperm Count: 4 million/mL (normal: >15 million/mL)
- Motility: 18% progressive (normal: >32%)
- Morphology: 1% normal forms (normal: >4%)
- Recommended treatment: IVF with ICSI โ where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg
"Ahmed took it hard. In our community, male infertility carries a particular stigma. He didn't tell his family. He barely wanted to talk about it with me at first. I had to remind him: this is our challenge, not his failure."
Limited Options in the UAE
The couple visited three fertility clinics in Dubai. The experience was consistent โ and consistently disappointing.
"The first clinic was in a luxury medical tower in Healthcare City. Beautiful facility. The consultation lasted 15 minutes. They quoted us 65,000 AED โ about $17,700 USD โ for one cycle of IVF with ICSI. No PGT-A included. No medications included. And they couldn't start for 8 weeks because they were fully booked."
The second clinic was slightly cheaper โ 55,000 AED โ but had lower published success rates. The third clinic offered a "package" of three cycles for 150,000 AED, which would have required them to take out a significant loan.
"In the UAE, IVF isn't covered by insurance for most expatriates, and even for nationals, coverage is limited. We were looking at spending the equivalent of a down payment on an apartment โ for a chance. Not a guarantee. A chance."
There was also the question of advanced technology. "We wanted PGT-A testing โ genetic screening of embryos. It's available in the UAE, but it adds 15,000โ20,000 AED per cycle. One clinic told us 'you probably don't need it at your age.' But I'm 32 and Ahmed's sperm has severe morphology issues. We wanted every advantage we could get."
Discovering FertiJourney
Fatima found FertiJourney through an Arabic-language fertility forum. "A woman in the forum mentioned traveling to China for IVF. At first I thought, 'China? For IVF?' But she posted her cost breakdown, and I couldn't believe it. Including flights and accommodation, she'd spent less than half of what we were being quoted in Dubai."
She showed Ahmed that evening. "He was skeptical โ more than I was. 'How can it be that much cheaper?' he asked. 'What's the catch?' Those were exactly the right questions to ask."
They spent the next two weeks researching. They looked up Luohu Hospital's credentials, read the doctors' publications, checked the clinic's success rates on official Chinese medical databases, and reached out to the woman from the forum for a direct conversation.
"She called me on WhatsApp. Spoke for an hour. Told me everything โ the good, the challenging, the surprising. She said the hardest part was the language barrier, but FertiJourney's interpreter made it manageable. She said the technology was better than what she'd seen in Dubai. And she said she was 28 weeks pregnant. That was the moment it became real for us."
Our Cultural Concerns About China
As a Muslim couple, Fatima and Ahmed had specific concerns about traveling to China for medical treatment:
- Halal food: Would they be able to find halal food easily, especially during the weeks of treatment when diet matters?
- Prayer facilities: Would they have a private space for daily prayers, especially during long days at the clinic?
- Privacy and modesty: Would the clinic respect their need for female doctors for Fatima's examinations? Would they have private consultation rooms?
- Cultural understanding: Would the staff understand their religious needs, or would they feel uncomfortable?
"These weren't small concerns," Ahmed explains. "They were fundamental to whether we could even consider this option. If we couldn't practice our faith comfortably, the cost savings wouldn't matter."
How FertiJourney Addressed Every Concern
During their initial video consultation with FertiJourney, Fatima raised all of their concerns directly. "I was nervous about asking. I didn't want to seem difficult. But the coordinator, Lin, was so understanding. She said, 'These are important questions. Let me address each one.'"
๐ Cultural & Religious Accommodations at Luohu
- Female medical staff: All examinations, ultrasounds, and procedures for Fatima were conducted by female doctors and nurses. "I never once had a male doctor for any intimate procedure. They arranged this without me even having to ask again."
- Private prayer room: The hospital had a quiet room that FertiJourney arranged to be available for prayer during clinic hours. "It wasn't a mosque, but it was clean, private, and they even provided a prayer mat and qibla direction."
- Private consultation rooms: All consultations were conducted in private rooms, with the door closed. "In Dubai, some consultations felt rushed in semi-open cubicles. At Luohu, we had complete privacy."
- Cultural briefing for staff: FertiJourney provided a cultural briefing to the medical team. "The nurses knew about our prayer times. They scheduled appointments around them. They understood why I wore hijab and never made me feel uncomfortable about it."
"After that consultation, Ahmed and I looked at each other. For the first time, it felt possible. Not just medically possible โ culturally possible. We could do this."
Halal Food in Shenzhen: A Practical Guide
One of FertiJourney's most valuable resources was a halal food guide for Shenzhen, prepared specifically for Muslim patients. "They'd clearly done this before," Ahmed says. "It wasn't generic โ it was specific to our neighborhood near the hospital."
๐ฝ๏ธ Halal Food Options Near Luohu Hospital
Multiple locations in Luohu. Hand-pulled noodle shops run by Hui Muslims โ 100% halal, affordable, delicious.
Uyghur cuisine โ lamb kebabs, pilaf, naan bread. Fully halal. Several within 15 minutes of the hospital.
Near Luohu Commercial City. Full halal menu, Arabic-speaking staff on certain days.
FertiJourney arranged halal meat delivery through a local supplier. "We cooked in our apartment most nights โ it was actually lovely."
The Shangri-La and other 5-star hotels in Luohu have halal kitchen options โ good for special occasions.
Shenzhen's seafood restaurants are abundant. All seafood is halal. "We ate the best prawns of our lives."
"Honestly, we ate better in Shenzhen than we expected. The Lanzhou noodle shops became our go-to โ fresh, halal, and about 30 AED for two people. We found a Xinjiang restaurant that made lamb kebabs that reminded Ahmed of home."
Arriving in Shenzhen
The flight from Dubai to Shenzhen took about 7 hours. FertiJourney's driver met them at the airport with a sign in both English and Arabic. "Seeing 'ุฃููุงู ูุณููุงู' โ 'Welcome' in Arabic โ on the sign was a small thing, but it meant a lot."
Their apartment was in the Luohu district, a 7-minute walk from the hospital. "Two bedrooms, modern kitchen, washing machine, fast WiFi. The building had a gym. There was a park across the street. It felt less like medical accommodation and more like a holiday rental."
Their interpreter, Ms. Zhang, spoke fluent English and had studied Arabic phrases specifically for their case. "She knew 'Bismillah' and 'Inshallah.' She knew our prayer times. On our first day, she took us to the nearest Lanzhou noodle shop and ordered for us. Within three days, we felt like we'd been there for weeks."
The Treatment: ICSI + PGT-A
Fatima's protocol was straightforward โ she was young (32) with good ovarian reserve, so her stimulation was a standard antagonist cycle. But the key difference was in the laboratory.
Day 1โ10: Stimulation
Fatima started Gonal-F 225 IU daily. Monitoring every 48 hours. "The injections were the hardest part for me. Ahmed learned to give them โ he was so gentle. It became our morning ritual." By day 10, she had 14 follicles measuring 16โ22mm.
Day 12: Egg Retrieval
Trigger shot at 9:30 PM on day 10. Retrieval 36 hours later. "The female anesthetist held my hand as I went under. When I woke up, Ahmed was there with Ms. Zhang. 'Twelve eggs,' she said. I cried."
Day 12: ICSI & Fertilization
Using ICSI, the embryologist selected the best individual sperm from Ahmed's sample and injected one into each mature egg. "The embryologist showed us a video of the ICSI process. Watching them select Ahmed's sperm and inject it into my eggs โ it was incredible."
Day 13โ17: Embryo Development
10 of 12 eggs fertilized. By day 5, 5 blastocysts had developed. Biopsies were taken from each for PGT-A testing. The embryos were frozen while awaiting results.
Day 27: PGT-A Results
Results came back via WhatsApp. "Ms. Zhang sent a voice message. 'Three euploid embryos. Two boys, one girl. All genetically normal.' Ahmed and I held each other and cried. Three healthy embryos. Three chances."
Privacy and Comfort at Luohu Hospital
Fatima was particularly impressed by the privacy protocols at Luohu. "In Dubai, even in private clinics, sometimes you feel like you're on a conveyor belt โ in and out, next patient please. At Luohu, every consultation was in a private room. The door was closed. Nobody interrupted."
"For my ultrasounds, only female staff were present. The doctor explained everything before she touched me. She asked permission at every step. It felt respectful in a way I hadn't experienced before."
Ahmed adds: "In our culture, privacy during medical procedures โ especially fertility treatment โ is extremely important. Luohu understood that completely. They never made us feel like our needs were unusual or difficult."
The clinic's WhatsApp communication system was another highlight. "Lab results came within hours, not days. Questions were answered immediately. Ms. Zhang was available seven days a week. We never felt alone or confused."
The Results: One Euploid Embryo Transferred
Fatima returned to Dubai after the egg retrieval, then flew back to Shenzhen two months later for the frozen embryo transfer. "I chose to transfer one euploid embryo โ a boy. We decided together. It felt right."
The FET protocol was simple: estrogen pills for 14 days to build her lining, progesterone suppositories, and a single ultrasound to confirm the lining was optimal at 10.4mm trilaminar. "The transfer itself was so peaceful. The doctor, the embryologist, the nurse โ all women. They dimmed the lights. Soft music was playing. It felt sacred."
The transfer took 12 minutes. "I watched on the screen as the catheter delivered our embryo โ a tiny flash of white. 'There he is,' the doctor said. 'Alhamdulillah,' I whispered."
Currently 15 Weeks Pregnant
The two-week wait was spent in Shenzhen. "We prayed a lot. We walked in the parks. We ate halal noodles. We tried not to obsess, but of course we did."
The beta HCG test: 568. "I was at the apartment when Ms. Zhang called. I heard her voice crack and I knew. 'Fatima, you're pregnant.' I fell to my knees. Ahmed was in the other room on a work call. I ran in, tears streaming down my face, and he just knew."
Two weeks later, the ultrasound confirmed a heartbeat at 145 bpm. "I recorded the sound on my phone. I sent it to my mother in Dubai. She called me back crying."
"At the time of writing, I am 15 weeks pregnant. Every day I wake up and thank Allah for this blessing. The baby is growing perfectly โ all scans are normal. We still have two euploid embryos frozen at Luohu. Inshallah, this is just the beginning of our family."
The Cost Comparison: Dubai vs. Shenzhen
| Expense | Dubai (AED) | Shenzhen (AED) |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic Fees & Monitoring | 35,000 | 18,000 |
| Medications | 8,000 | 5,500 |
| Egg Retrieval + ICSI | 15,000 | Included |
| PGT-A (5 embryos) | 18,000 | 7,500 |
| Embryo Freezing (1 year) | 5,000 | 2,200 |
| FET Cycle | 12,000 | 5,500 |
| Flights (2 round trips ร 2 people) | N/A | 8,000 |
| Accommodation (7 weeks total) | N/A | 10,500 |
| FertiJourney Coordination | N/A | 4,500 |
| Interpreter Services | N/A | 2,200 |
| Total (complete cycle) | 93,000 AED | 63,900 AED |
Total Savings: 29,100 AED ($7,900 USD) โ including flights, accommodation, PGT-A, and all coordination services.
"And here's the thing the numbers don't show," Ahmed adds. "In Dubai, PGT-A wasn't included and would have been another 18,000 AED. The clinic's lab was older. We would have waited 8 weeks just to start. In Shenzhen, we had the latest technology, PGT-A was included at a fraction of the cost, and we started within three weeks. The 'cheaper' option was actually the better one in every way."
Fatima & Ahmed's Advice for Muslim Couples
- Don't let cultural concerns stop you from exploring. "We almost didn't consider China because we assumed our religious needs couldn't be met. We were wrong. FertiJourney and Luohu went above and beyond to accommodate us."
- Ask the hard questions upfront. "During the video consultation, we asked about halal food, prayer space, female doctors, privacy. Every question was answered with specific solutions, not vague promises."
- Shenzhen has a real halal food scene. "The Hui Muslim community in China has been there for centuries. Lanzhou noodle shops are everywhere. Xinjiang restaurants are everywhere. We never went hungry."
- The technology difference is real. "Luohu's lab was newer and better equipped than any clinic we saw in Dubai. For male factor infertility, the lab matters โ and Luohu's was world-class."
- Bring your faith with you โ it will sustain you. "We prayed together every day during treatment. The hospital accommodated our prayer times. Our faith was not a barrier โ it was our strength."
Fatima places her hand on her growing belly. "We took a risk traveling so far for treatment. But the biggest risk would have been staying in Dubai, spending everything we had, and still not having a baby. Sometimes you have to go far from home to find what you're looking for."
She smiles. "And sometimes, what you're looking for is waiting for you in a city you never imagined visiting."
