About the Apgar score
The Apgar score is a quick check of a newborn's condition at 1 and 5 minutes after birth, looking at colour, heart rate, reflexes, muscle tone and breathing. Each sign scores 0, 1 or 2.
It guides the delivery team's immediate care but does not predict long-term health on its own. Many healthy babies have a slightly low score in the first minute that recovers by five.

What is a normal Apgar score?
