About body fat percentage
Body fat percentage measures the proportion of fat to total weight. It is a better indicator of metabolic health than BMI, because two people with the same BMI can have very different body fat levels.
The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat from circumference measurements. It is reasonably accurate for most adults, but it can overestimate fat in very muscular people and is less reliable during pregnancy — use it as a guide, not a clinical diagnosis.
Body fat calculator FAQ
How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?
It is usually within about 3–4% of clinical methods like DEXA for most adults. Accuracy depends on correct measurement — measure at the natural waist and just below the larynx for the neck.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For fitness, about 14–17% (men) or 21–24% (women) is considered healthy. Dropping below the essential-fat floor — about 6% (men) or 14% (women) — is not recommended for long-term health.
Can I use this calculator during pregnancy?
No — body shape changes during pregnancy make circumference-based formulas unreliable. Focus on healthy weight gain instead, using our pregnancy weight gain calculator.
