What is a normal resting heart rate?

For most adults, 60 to 100 beats per minute at rest is considered normal. Trained athletes often have lower rates, around 40–60 bpm.

How do I measure my resting heart rate?

Sit quietly for five minutes, then count the pulse at your wrist or neck for 60 seconds (or 30 seconds × 2). It is best measured first thing in the morning.

Is a high resting heart rate dangerous?

Occasionally high readings are normal due to stress or caffeine. A consistently high resting rate should be discussed with a doctor.
